Description:ALON is a non-profit organization in Israel committed to narrowing the socioeconomic gaps in Israel’s multi-cultural society and was established in 1998, by university students from the city of Kfar Saba who decided to take a more active role in confronting Israel’s social problems. Currently, over 5,000 children, youth and adults are taking part in ALON's activities, facilitated by approximately 300 young volunteers aged 18-22 in the following cities: Hatzor HaGlilit, Jisr-az-Zarka, Carmel City, Hadera, Netanya, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Bat Yam, Lod, Jerusalem, Yavne and Be'er Sheva.
Programs:ALON works with the most deprived sectors of Israeli society, and all of our projects take place in neighborhoods of the low socio-economical stratum. Our projects are designed specifically to assist underprivileged groups including new immigrants from Ethiopia and the former Soviet-Union, youths from all backgrounds that have dropped out of school or are at risk of doing so.
Accomplishments:
  • Over 80% of the children taking part in the ALON activities successfully reach the goals that have been set by their schools.
  • In all activities operated by the organization, groups are formed and ongoing close-knit connections are established between the volunteers and the participants.
  • The organization has been successful in raising the volunteers' level of social awareness and commitment to social change.
Future Objectives:
  • Higher achievements in education - the main focus of our organization. As children and youth are the future of our society, our aim is to advance them to the point where they will be able to meet the requirements needed to go on to higher education and they will understand that this is the key to success.
  • Community Empowerment – No social or educational action can be complete without empowering the people of the community. Creating active and involved community, aware of its rights and supportive of its members, is the key to any campaign aimed at narrowing social gaps and creating a just society.
  • Creating Awareness – In order to make both of the above possible, it is extremely important to raise the general awareness of the problems within Israeli society. ALON aims to do so through various programs, which present the problems, their origins and alternative solutions, to the public. Through these programs we wish to create an active public discussion.
Effectiveness:The school projects are monitored regularly by the school teachers and the ALON volunteers, coordinator and facilitator. At the end of each term (the school year is divided into 3), all pupils participating take written and oral exams to monitor their progress. All complimentary activities for the children as well as for the volunteers are monitored weekly (attendance, behavior, participation) in staff meetings and once a fortnight by the facilitator. Evaluation point to be considered in accordance to the programs' goals and objectives: •Perseverance: all volunteers fully complete the year. •Perseverance: all children fully complete the year and attend the morning and afternoon activities throughout the year. •Success and effectiveness: in terms of improvement in school grades of those who participated in the programs implemented by the volunteers. •Behavior: improving the individual and social behavior of participants according to evaluation by the volunteers, the school teachers and principals and the childrens' parents.

Comments:In November 2006 the ALON organization received the Speaker of the Knesset's Prize for Quality of Life. The prize honored ALON's work to serve underprivileged communities, bridge gaps between sectors of Israeli society and assist immigrants with their absorption to Israeli life. In 2007 Mr. Sachar Be'eri, the organization's Chairman, was one of ten finalists in the Globes and Ernst & Young's Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. "ALON's volunteers are giving us a more positive attitude toward the younger generation. They could be doing other things for themselves, but here they are working 24 hours without any reward. All they get are thanks. The volunteers are getting as much, if not more, than the pupils as they will become outstanding citizens and leaders of Israel" (David Ben-Zohar, school principal in 'Ironi Zain' School in Jaffa)
